Freshwater ecosystems are essential to human well-being, as they directly contribute to the livelihoods of billions of people and provide a range of goods and services.

Conservation of biodiversity that depends on groundwater requires developing strategies that allow for the use of groundwater in a way that is compatible with the persistence of these species and ecosystems. Development of these strategies must be based on an understanding of :1) species and ecosystems that depend on groundwater, 2) how this biodiversity depends on groundwater, 3) the extent, source and movement of groundwater and 4) how alterations in the amount and quality of groundwater affect groundwater-dependent ecosystems.
