Water purification

Artificial groundwater recharge is the infiltration of surface water into shallow aquifers to increase the quantity of water stored in the subsurface and to improve its quality by processes of natural attenuation. It can be practices especially in river valleys and sedimentary plains by infiltrating river or lake water into shallow sand and gravel layers. In order to improve the efficiency of natural purification processes in the subsurface, artificial groundwater recharge can be combined with pre-treatment, bank infiltration, plant purification, subsurface dams and artificial aquifers.
